Since then, the midfielder has led the team to European Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup success and he appears on course to lift the Premier League trophy in the next few months. The likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk have already been mentioned as candidates for the Player of the Year accolade but Robertson feels Henderson should be the leading candidate.
He told Sky Sports: “For me, I think he’s the leading candidate. At times this season when we’ve struggled Hendo has been the one that has driven us forward. He’s the one who has made sure we don’t get slack, or he has chipped in with some really important goals or really important assists. Maybe his performances at the start of the season went a little bit under the radar, but as the season has progressed he’s not really had a bad game.”
Henderson has been one of the Premier League’s under-rated players but he has finally received the recognition with the trophy success for the Reds over the past eight months. Playing from a central role, Henderson has not necessarily flourished with his goalscoring contributions (three goals and four assists) but he has come up with some standout performances which have changed the complexion of games.
Liverpool are only six wins away from bagging the Premier League title for the first time. They are scheduled to face Norwich City on the road this weekend. Jurgen Klopp’s side should come up with an easy victory with the Canaries struggling at the bottom of the standings with the league’s joint-worst defensive record.
