Jamie Carragher has insisted that Michael Owen deserves to be given a warm reception when he dons a Liverpool shirt today.
The Manchester United striker will be playing up front for a Liverpool XI in Jamie Carragher's testimonial match. Carragher also tried but filed to get Cristiano Ronaldo to play.
Having been an Anfield favourite for many years Owen upset a number of Reds supporters when he signed for arch-rivals Manchester United.
However, despite his decision to play for Sir Alex Ferguson, Carragher believes that the Liverpool academy graduate should be welcomed back to the club.
He told Liverpool's official website: "I know people have talked about his situation with playing for Manchester United but you have to remember what he did for this club. Michael's best years in football were with Liverpool.
"He came through the ranks here and was a local lad coming through so it will be good for him to put the red shirt on again. I know he plays for Man United now but we have to take that on the chin and he deserves a great reception."
