LIVERPOOL CHALLENGE

After managing to maintain the form up until Christmas, Liverpool have managed to finish top of the table on this day, which is often considered as the precursor towards the destination of the title.

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen, who has won numerous titles with the club, says that Brendan Rodgers can win the title this campaign if he manages to recruit players with due diligence in January. Amongst of the title chasing teams, Liverpool are acknowledged to have the weakest squad. They have an overreliance on players like Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, and Steven Gerrard.

They are currently fighting to maintain the form due to the absence of Sturridge and Gerrard. Pundit Michael Owen, meanwhile, feels that Liverpool have the ability to sustain this form over the course of the season, while he is not convinced by Arsenal, who have led to the table for most of the season. Much of the good form of Arsenal has been down to players like Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud, but Owen thinks that Ozil has been very inconsistent this season and hence Arsenal may not win the title.

After a great start to his Arsenal career, Ozil has failed to produce with some of the big matches. His latest came in the 0-0 draw against Chelsea.

"Liverpool are fully deserving of being labelled title contenders. The Reds are firmly back in the big time. The noises I am hearing are that Rodgers has money to spend this coming window and should he unearth another couple of gems, I certainly wouldn’t back against them lifting some silverware come May. Despite people constantly telling me Mesut Ozil is world class, his inconsistency means that we only see occasional glimpses of real quality," said Owen.

Arsenal paid a club record £ 42 million for the German international.
