Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen has failed with his prediction after his former club were knocked out of the Champions League by Spanish champions Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night. Michael Owen had earlier predicted a gutsy 1-0 win at home to Atletico Madrid for the Red Devils as he tipped them to at least make the quarterfinals.
Michael Owen made his prediction on the last 16 tie between Manchester United and Atletico Madrid in his column on BetVictor. According to him, Manchester United got a good result in Madrid in the first leg with young winger Anthony Elanga netting in the last ten minutes to secure a 1-1 draw and that Manchester United secure their place in the quarterfinals at the expense of their Spanish opponents since they are no longer an excellently defensive team.
Owen was left with a wrong prediction after Manchester United were beaten 1-0 at home by Atletico Madrid thanks to the first half goal from Brazil international Renan Lodi. His strike four minutes from the half-time interval was the difference between the two teams over two legs as Atletico Madrid sealed their spot in the last eight via a 2-1 aggregate victory.
After conceding the goal from Lodi, Manchester United threw everything at Atletico Madrid, but they were unable to find a route back into the second leg and the tie in the process. They created one big chance and that was the Raphael Varane header which was superbly saved by Jan Oblak in the Atletico Madrid goal.
On Chelsea, Michael Owen believes they are in the driving seat ahead of their second leg clash with French champions Lille after winning the first leg with a two-goal margin. The Blues scored their goals through Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic either side of the half-time interval as they ran out 2-0 winners in the first leg of their last 16 tie. Owen has predicted a 1-0 away win for Chelsea when they take on Lille on Wednesday night.
