Michael Owen expects Barcelona to increase the misery on Arsenal

Michael Owen expects Barcelona to increase the misery on Arsenal by getting another victory in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Catalan club have already secured a 2-0 advantage from the first leg. Those two away goals coupled with the victory mean that their passage into the next round is virtually confirmed. Barcelona have been the strongest team in European football for the last five years and Arsenal have underperformed heavily during this same period. Such differences in quality is likely to tell in the second leg according to Owen.

Even though Arsene Wenger has spoken with confidence about coming back into the tie, Owen says that the club will have to switch into damage limitation mode in order to avoid a thrashing. Barcelona are especially strong at the Camp Nou where the pitch is larger. Arsenal’s recent form has not been convincing either. Just one victory in the last five games of all competitions – a 4-0 win over Championship outfit Hull City – is not the kind of form one needs to take into the Camp Nou in order to think about a victory. Arsenal were just recently knockout from the FA Cup and going out of the Champions League will effectively end their campaign.

“Arsenal travel to the Nou Camp as 33/1 outsiders to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League but realistically they are even more unlikely on paper and would need a minor miracle to turn the Catalans over in their own backyard.Barcelona are the 1/5 favourites to win the return leg on home soil, but are in a similar position to Manchester City and can afford the luxury of sitting back and being patient throughout the 90,” said Owen. Arsenal are 11 points behind table leaders Leicester City in the Premier League.
